Border Collie Vegetable and Fruit Treats

Border Collie Vegetable and Fruit Treats

We all love to spoil our dogs, and that of course includes giving them treats they probably shouldn’t be eating. In this article I’ll share with you some of the healthier treats that I can give to my Border Collie without feeling guilty about it later.

I try to stay away from the store bought treats because I’m never really sure how “Organic” or “Natural” they really are since those words don’t seem to mean anything anymore.

Healthy Fruits and Veggies

Vegetables? How can you call those treats! Those are like a punishment!

Well if you think that then most dogs would probably disagree with you. Granted dogs have different tastes just as humans do, but for the most part dogs actually enjoy eating some healthy vegetables as treats.

Vegetables I give to my Border Collies:

  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Zucchini
  • Cucumber

Healthy Fruit Treats:

  • Apples
  • Bananas (my dogs hate them for some reason though)
  • Pears
  • Mangos
  • Pineapples
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries

I always cook the vegetables before I give them to my dogs. The problem with vegetables is that dogs digestive system is not built for processing plants completely. They are carnivores by nature so only give the treats in moderation.

What to Avoid

Some fruits and vegetables are actually bad for your dog, in some cases poisonous. Stay clear of the following:

  • Onions
  • Grapes
  • Raisins
  • Citrus Fruits (Oranges, Lemons, etc.)
  • Fruit Seeds
  • Raw Potatoes

If you’re giving your dog some vegies or fruits not on this list, leave a comment and I’ll update the list. I’m interested to know what kind of snacks you give your Border Collies as well.
